Our Hate Life
I recently read about an
account given by the 19th-century preacher Henry Ward Beecher.
He spoke of a mother in the wild frontier country who was washing
clothes beside a small river. Her only son was playing nearby.
Suddenly she realized he was gone. She called his name, but
there was no answer. Alarmed, the mother ran to the house, but
her son was not there.
Frantically, the woman ran
out to the forest. There she found her child, but she was too
late. The youngster had been killed by a wolf.
Heartbroken, she picked up the lifeless body, and drew him close to
her heart, and tenderly carried him home.
He finished his illustration
by saying, "Oh, how that mother hated wolves!" Every Christian
should have a similar "hate life" when it comes to evil. Yet
many mothers (and fathers) who are so careful to guard their
children from physical harm fail to notice the evil forces that
threaten their children's spiritual welfare. As a result, they
leave them unprotected by showing little concern for the kinds of
friends their children make, the magazines they read, the music they
listen to, or the TV programs they watch. But whenever these
influences are bad, they should take an active role in pointing out
what is wrong with them and given them biblical instruction on how
to avoid the evil they are confronting.
Whenever our children
confront evil in the world, they should have had the admonitions,
advice and love from their parents. If you leave them to make
their own decisions without any input from the Bible and you, it
quite often leads to terrible consequences.
It's not wrong to hate when
we hate what is wrong.
